The U.S. government is planning to exempt major tech companies like Amazon, Alphabet, and Microsoft from impending chip tariffs as they compete to build AI data centers. According to Ming Pao, insiders revealed that the exemption will be linked to investment commitments from Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC). TSMC will allocate the corresponding tariff exemption quotas to its U.S. clients, allowing them to import chips without incurring tariffs or to offset them. This exemption plan underscores U.S. President Donald Trump's commitment to imposing chip tariffs to encourage domestic chip manufacturers while also supporting companies that heavily rely on imported chips to advance AI development in the United States.
