WAL is the “credential token associated with that storage tier, facilitating participation in governance and staking, in order to maintain decentralization.” Walrus takes care of massive amounts of data by providing blob storage, along with erasure coding so that files can still be accessed in case portions of the network are not functioning. “That is what you'd expect out of storage in general, in this area of decentralized storage—it's not just a bunch of marketing buzz, it's what you'd expect.” It's private blockchain interaction, too, that makes it applicable enough to build an actual application that cannot function in a completely public network. “The overall vision here is that you've got a robust stack, execution in Sui, storage in Walrus, and incentives in WAL.”
