Walrus ($WAL) The Decentralized Cloud Powering Web3
Walrus Protocol is a next-generation decentralized storage layer built on the Sui blockchain, designed to handle large data “blobs” such as videos, images, NFTs, and AI datasets with high efficiency, resilience, and privacy.
Built on Sui, Walrus benefits from high throughput and low latency, allowing fast and reliable storage management at scale. At its core is Walrus’ unique “Red Stuff” technology, which uses advanced 2D erasure coding. Files are split into multiple shards and distributed across the network, making data fully recoverable even if up to two-thirds of storage nodes go offline. This architecture delivers strong fault tolerance without excessive redundancy.
Walrus is also highly cost-efficient. By minimizing unnecessary data replication, it can be up to 100x cheaper than traditional blockchain storage solutions such as Arweave or Filecoin. At the same time, its decentralized design ensures privacy and censorship resistance, giving users full control over their data without relying on centralized providers.
The $WAL token powers the entire ecosystem. It is used to pay for storage and data retrieval, staked by node operators to secure the network and earn rewards, and used in governance to vote on protocol upgrades and key parameters.
In essence, Walrus aims to become the decentralized equivalent of AWS for Web3—providing permanent, private, and affordable data storage for AI, NFTs, and decentralized applications.
