$BTC ECP suspends 152 lawmakers over asset statement violations

Pakistan’s Election Commission (ECP) has suspended 152 lawmakers from the National Assembly, Senate and provincial assemblies for failing to submit their annual statements of assets and liabilities by the deadline.

According to the ECP, the suspended members will not be allowed to perform their duties until they submit the required details, including assets of their spouses and dependent children for the financial year 2024–25.

The list includes members from all legislatures: 50 from the Punjab Assembly, 33 from Sindh, 28 from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, seven from Balochistan, as well as several MNAs and nine senators.

The commission said the move was taken under Section 137 of the Elections Act, 2017, which makes asset declaration mandatory. Last year, 139 lawmakers were suspended for the same reason.
