Elon Musk is suing OpenAI and Microsoft, claiming they betrayed the company's non-profit mission and seeking up to $134 billion in damages. Musk, who co-founded OpenAI in 2015, alleges that the company's partnership with Microsoft and shift to a for-profit model was a breach of their original agreement. OpenAI has dismissed the lawsuit as "baseless" and part of a "harassment campaign" by Musk.
According to court filings, Musk's expert witness, C. Paul Wazzan, calculated that OpenAI's wrongful gains range from $65.5 billion to $109.43 billion, while Microsoft's gains are between $13.3 billion and $25.06 billion. Musk's lawyer, Steven Molo, argues that Musk is entitled to a share of OpenAI's $500 billion valuation due to his contributions, including $38 million in seed funding and technical expertise.
OpenAI has responded that Musk's claims are "unserious" and intended to fuel a harassment campaign. The company plans to address the allegations at trial, scheduled for April.
