Hong Kong Customs announced on January 29 that it uncovered a smuggling case involving a private vehicle at the Heung Yuen Wai Boundary Control Point on January 27. According to PANews, customs officers seized approximately 219 kilograms of suspected smuggled silver with an estimated value of about HKD 6.1 million. Following an investigation, a 46-year-old male driver and a 40-year-old male passenger were arrested and charged with attempting to export unmanifested cargo. The case was brought before the Fanling Magistrates’ Court on January 29. Under Hong Kong’s Import and Export Ordinance, smuggling is a serious offense, carrying a maximum penalty of a HKD 2 million fine and up to seven years’ imprisonment upon conviction.
