During a visit yesterday to a friend who is employed at the State CID, I noticed he was deeply engrossed in managing a specific investigation. Upon entering, I observed a group comprising four older women and a man, all of whom appeared visibly distressed. Recognizing the sensitivity of the moment, I gestured to my friend that I would wait in the reception area while he attended to them.
I later learned the details of the case, which involved a lecturer from a university in Portharcourt. This individual had swindled the victims out of 4m, 6m, and 7m respectively. The suspect had already been detained, and my friend was in the midst of interviewing the complainants when I arrived.
The accused had promised to facilitate "Japa" visas for these individuals but ended up defrauding not only the people present in the office but also their friends and family members who could not make it to the station. Shockingly, while he was misleading these victims, he was simultaneously orchestrating his own plans to flee the country. Unfortunately, his personal visa had already been issued.
The revelation left me utterly speechless. I feel a deep sense of sympathy for everyone involved.
