Walrus is a decentralized storage protocol launched by Sui developer Mysten Labs, set to go live on the mainnet in March 2025 and complete a $140 million funding round. Its core positioning is as the storage infrastructure of the Sui ecosystem, filling the gaps of traditional distributed storage in terms of cost, programmability, and privacy. Its native token WAL aims to build a sustainable storage economic model to support decentralized data storage, access, and management, adaptable for various scenarios such as NFT assets, AI models, and blockchain archives, while also serving as a data availability layer for rollups.
Efficient storage technology: Utilizing the Red-Stuff two-dimensional coding protocol, requiring only 4-5 times data replication, with storage costs 500 times lower than Arweave, more efficient than Filecoin, and significantly reducing the probability of data loss.
