Vanguard purchases more Strategy stocks

My heart is ringing alarm bells.

Vanguard has always been one of the companies I admire the most, whose core logic is passive buy-and-hold, and it is unlikely to 'actively' bottom-feed and purchase more Strategy stocks. Moreover, MSTR's stock price has already dropped over 60% since last year, and theoretically, it should be reduced rather than increased.

So I directly searched for the original data. I found that mainstream news basically did not report on Vanguard increasing its holdings in MSTR; related news was almost only circulated on social media platforms (Facebook, X, etc.) or appeared on cryptocurrency media like Bitget, which was relayed from The Bitcoin Historian, making it third-hand information.

In fact, Vanguard's 13G/A filing shows:

Its holdings increased from the original 18.5M shares to 24M shares

The number of shares increased by approximately 5.5M shares

The increase in holdings is approximately +29.79% (not the 21% stated by the platform)

At first glance, it seems like a significant increase in holdings, but recent news over the past six months provides a reasonable explanation:

2025/10/23 Purchase of 1.7M shares of VGT: Tracking the MSCI US Investable Market Information Technology 25/50 Index
2026/01/16 Purchase of 2.91M shares of VMCIX: Tracking the CRSP US Mid Cap Index
2026/01/20 Purchase of 1.23M shares of VVIAX: Tracking the CRSP US Large Cap Value Index

The total of the three is approximately 5.8M shares, very close to the figures in the filing.

In other words, Vanguard is not 'actively' 'bottom-fishing' MSTR, but multiple passive ETFs tracking different indices are passively executing index buy orders. Coincidentally, MSTR has been newly included in three indices, resulting in a one-time passive buy order, after which it will be rebalanced according to index rules.

If MSTR's stock price falls out of the index, Vanguard will also sell without mercy, and there will be no active buying.

All of this completely aligns with the logic of passive funds; if it is strong enough, it will be included, and if it does not meet the threshold, it will be excluded, regardless of whether the Vanguard CEO likes it.

Passive funds are like diamond hands, but they only hold on if they qualify.
