The US government is at risk of another shutdown on January 31, 2026, as funding for large parts of the federal government, including the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Pentagon, expires. The Republican-led House of Representatives has passed the funding bill, but it still requires approval in the Senate, where Democrats are opposing it due to concerns over immigration enforcement and the handling of recent shootings in Minneapolis

In fact, Senate Democrats have indicated they won't provide votes to proceed with the appropriations bill if the DHS funding bill is included, citing concerns over Trump's immigration agenda and the actions of federal agents. With the deadline looming, Congress is working to pass the remaining appropriation bills to avoid a shutdown

The current funding resolution expires on January 30, 2026, and lawmakers are trying to reach a compromise before.
