Russia Sees 200% Surge in GPU Sales as Illegal Crypto Mining Accelerates

Russia is facing a dramatic spike in video card demand—up 233%—as illegal crypto mining operations intensify across the country, fueled by rising crypto prices and access to cheap or stolen electricity.

According to Russia’s top electronics retailer M.Video-Eldorado, GPU sales have more than tripled in both revenue and units sold during the first half of 2025. While some of this demand is attributed to gaming and AI use, experts warn that the bulk of the surge is tied to illicit mining—especially in regions with subsidized or unmonitored power grids.

“Black mining”—unauthorized crypto mining using stolen energy—is rampant in areas like Dagestan, Ingushetia, and Karachay-Cherkessia, where rigs are often hidden in basements, garages, and near substations. Analysts estimate that damages from illegal mining in 2024 exceeded 10 billion rubles ($125 million), and 2025 is likely to surpass that.

Authorities are now cracking down. Mining has been banned in over a dozen regions, and legislation is advancing to limit mining in data centers and disconnect even legal farms during peak hours. While Russia legalized crypto mining in 2024, miners must register with tax authorities—those using over 6,000 kWh/month without doing so now face steep penalties and possible asset seizure.

Experts warn of looming energy crises if control measures fail, drawing parallels to past blackouts in Iran and Kazakhstan caused by unchecked mining operations.

As the ruble strengthens and hardware becomes more affordable, the growing underground mining economy poses both economic and infrastructural risks for Russia’s energy landscape.
