Tomorrow, February 6th, we celebrate St. Paul Miki and Companions, Martyrs of Japan, the first canonized Japanese saints.
In 1597, during Toyotomi Hideyoshi’s persecution, Paul Miki (Jesuit seminarian) and 25 companions (priests, brothers, laymen) were marched 600 miles to Nagasaki, crucified on crosses, and lanced. From his cross Paul preached forgiveness: “I am Japanese and a Jesuit… I am dying for the Gospel.”
They were canonized in 1862.
“Since Jesus Christ suffered death for us, we must be ready to die for Him.”
Paul Miki graces for the day:
- Pray for persecuted Christians worldwide.
- Offer forgiveness to one person who has wronged you.
- Light a candle and say: “St. Paul Miki, give us courage to witness faithfully.”
- Quick act: speak a word of truth in charity.
