The incident occurred during a promotional event intended to award small cash rewards (around $1.40 USD) to participants. Due to a configuration error, some users received full Bitcoin units, amounting to a total of approximately 620,000 bitcoins being distributed incorrectly. Bithumb quickly restricted affected accounts and recovered 99.7% of the mistakenly sent funds within 35 minutes of the error.
