The Trump administration is going for Venezuela’s jugular economically.
U.S. forces have been ordered to focus "almost exclusively" on enforcing a "quarantine" of Venezuelan oil for at least the next two months, a U.S. official told Reuters:
"The efforts so far have put tremendous pressure on Maduro, and the belief is that by late January, Venezuela will be facing an economic calamity unless it agrees to make significant concessions."
The word choice matters.
"Quarantine" instead of "blockade" is straight out of the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis playbook.
Kennedy's team used it specifically to avoid escalation.
As Defense Secretary McNamara later explained:
"We called it a quarantine because blockade is a word of war."
Over 15,000 troops now in the Caribbean.
An aircraft carrier. 11 warships. A dozen F-35s.
Two tankers seized.
A third attempt underway.
They're not invading. They're strangling.
