Walrus Protocol is a next-generation decentralized storage network developed by Mysten Labs, created to address one of blockchain’s major limitations: handling large-scale data.

Rather than pushing heavy files like videos, images, or AI datasets directly onto blockchains, Walrus uses a more efficient design. The Sui blockchain acts as the coordination and control layer, while a separate network of Walrus nodes manages data storage. This architecture enables high performance, scalability, and lower costs.

A key innovation behind Walrus is its proprietary technology, Red Stuff. Instead of duplicating entire files across nodes, data is split into small fragments known as slivers and distributed throughout the network. This allows files to be fully recovered even if up to two-thirds of the nodes become unavailable.

The outcome is a highly resilient storage system that can be up to 100× more cost-effective than traditional decentralized storage solutions.

At the core of the ecosystem is the $WAL token, which supports payments, incentives, and programmable functionality. This transforms storage from a basic service into a secure, programmable asset for developers.

Walrus Protocol isn’t just optimizing decentralized storage—it’s redefining how data is stored, secured, and used in the Web3 era.
