Walrus protocol is an advanced solution for securing decentralized data, making storage efficient and affordable, even when some nodes are dishonest or the network is slow. Traditional systems like Filecoin and Arweave use full replication, where the entire data is sent to every node. This increases storage costs and puts heavy load on the network.

Walrus solves this problem through smart encoding. Data is divided into smaller pieces and distributed across different nodes, and even a few pieces are enough to recover the full data. This approach reduces storage costs and makes the system more scalable without relying on full replication.

In strawman designs, either full replication is used or recovery remains expensive even after encoding. Walrus goes beyond these models by optimizing both data dispersal and recovery. As a result, storage becomes cheaper, access becomes faster, and the system becomes more reliable—especially for AI, NFTs, and Web3 applications.
