"Dusk" is a 1916 short story by H.H. Munro, writing under the pen name Saki. It centers on Norman Gortsby, a cynical man sitting in a London park at twilight, which he calls "the hour of the defeated". Gortsby observes people who have failed in life, enjoying the gloom that hides their shame. A young man sits beside him, spinning a desperate tale about being new in town, losing his hotel, and forgetting the address. Gortsby initially disbelieves the story, assuming it's a scam. However, when he finds a bar of soap, he assumes it belongs to the young man and, feeling guilty for his judgment, lends him money. The irony is revealed when an elderly man returns to look for the soap he lost, confirming the young man was a clever fraudster.@Dusk $DUSK #Dusk
