Quando le persone entrano per la prima volta nel Web3, spesso si concentrano su token, portafogli e applicazioni decentralizzate. Ciò che di solito rimane invisibile è l'infrastruttura che supporta tutto dietro le quinte. Ogni applicazione blockchain dipende dai dati: metadati NFT, immagini, video, risorse di contratti intelligenti, beni di gioco e contenuti generati dagli utenti. Senza disponibilità di dati affidabili, anche le applicazioni decentralizzate più avanzate non possono funzionare correttamente.
Le blockchain tradizionali non sono state progettate per memorizzare grandi volumi di dati. Prioritizzano la sicurezza e il consenso, il che rende costosa e inefficiente la memorizzazione on-chain per file pesanti. Di conseguenza, la maggior parte dei sistemi Web3 si affida a livelli di archiviazione esterni. Se quei livelli sono centralizzati, introducono punti di guasto singoli, rischi di censura e preoccupazioni per l'affidabilità a lungo termine.
