President Donald Trump issued a direct warning to Japan: if they do not increase their imports of U.S. rice, they will face new tariffs.
🔴 “They don’t want our rice, even though they have a shortage. We will send them a letter,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
Japan is one of the main trading partners of the U.S., but has shown resistance to importing more American rice. In 2024, they bought $298 million in rice, but according to Trump, “it’s not enough.”
The threat comes just before July 9, the self-imposed deadline by Trump to reinstate higher tariffs on several countries if agreements are not reached.
Japan seeks to eliminate the 25% tariff on their cars, but Trump refuses, arguing that Tokyo does not import enough cars manufactured in the U.S.
💬 Kevin Hassett, economic advisor, indicated that some agreements could be announced after July 4, but warned that Trump is ready to act if there are no advancements.
Tensions rise as the United States negotiates with at least 10 countries to avoid tariffs, while others – like Japan – may receive official letters with new tariffs.
