On August 7, reports indicated that Trump would sign an executive order allowing private equity funds, real estate, cryptocurrencies, and other alternative assets to be included in 401(k) retirement accounts. The executive order will direct the Department of Labor to reassess the guidelines for alternative asset investments in retirement plans.
Previously, the Biden administration issued guidance in 2022, pointing out that cryptocurrencies pose "significant risks of fraud, theft, and loss," requiring employers to be "extremely cautious" before offering related investment products to employees. However, the Trump administration's Department of Labor withdrew this guidance on May 28 of this year, stating that the standard was "lacking a legal basis," granting employers the autonomy to decide whether to include cryptocurrencies in their 401(k) investment portfolios.
