There’s a lesson you usually learn the hard way: you don’t truly understand what an oracle does until a bad price breaks your system.
When we began building a Bitcoin-centered DeFi mechanism, we focused obsessively on everything except the most delicate component — data. Liquidation logic was refined, risk models were tuned, funding flows were stress-tested. We simply assumed that when our contracts asked, “What’s the price?” the answer would be correct.
We treated the oracle like background infrastructure. Quiet. Swappable. Not worth much thought — until it failed.
Then we replayed an extreme BTC move.
A sharp candle. Low liquidity. One major exchange printing something closer to a hallucination than a real market price. The kind of wick a human trader would instinctively ignore and say, “That’s noise.” But our early oracle didn’t think like a trader. It took the wick literally. No filters. No context. No aggregation. The contract reacted exactly as programmed — instant liquidation.
The simulation succeeded technically, which meant it failed where it mattered most.
