How Plasma Works
PlasmaBFT Consensus
Plasma secures its blockchain using PlasmaBFT, a consensus mechanism derived from the Fast HotStuff Byzantine Fault Tolerant (BFT) protocol. HotStuff is a modern consensus approach that maintains network security even when a portion of participants behave maliciously, while the “Fast” variant reduces communication overhead among validators.
PlasmaBFT extends this model by processing steps such as block proposals, voting, and confirmations in parallel rather than sequentially. This architecture significantly improves block production speed and enables transaction finality within seconds, supporting rapid settlement for payment-focused use cases.
EVM Execution Layer
Plasma’s execution layer is powered by Reth, an Ethereum client implemented in Rust. While PlasmaBFT handles block ordering and finality, Reth is responsible for transaction execution, state transitions, and Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) logic.
As a result, Plasma maintains full EVM compatibility, enabling developers to write smart contracts in Solidity and integrate familiar Ethereum tools without friction.
Key Features
Zero-Fee USDT Transfers
Plasma enables zero-fee USDT transfers through an integrated paymaster system operated by the Plasma Foundation. This paymaster covers gas costs for standard USDT transfer functions, applying basic eligibility rules and rate limits to ensure sustainable usage.
Gas fees are funded from a managed XPL allocation, allowing applications to offer free USDT transfers to users. This zero-fee model applies only to simple USDT transfers, while other transactions still require XPL fees to preserve validator incentives and network security.
Custom Gas Tokens
Plasma includes a protocol-level paymaster smart contract that allows applications to support alternative gas payment tokens. Developers can register ERC-20 tokens—such as stablecoins or ecosystem assets—so users can pay transaction fees directly with tokens they already hold.
The paymaster is maintained and audited by the protocol and does not impose additional fees. This design removes the need for users to hold XPL solely for gas, improving onboarding and making Plasma well-suited for high-volume payment flows and DeFi applications.

Confidential Payments
Confidential Payments is an upcoming Plasma module aimed at enhancing privacy for stablecoin transactions. The feature is designed to conceal sensitive transaction details, including transferred amounts and recipient addresses, while remaining compatible with existing wallets and decentralized applications (DApps).
As of September 2025, Confidential Payments is still under active research and development, with multiple privacy-preserving techniques being evaluated. The module has not yet been released for production use.
Bitcoin Bridge
Plasma features a native Bitcoin bridge that enables BTC to be transferred directly into its EVM environment without relying on custodial services or traditional wrapped tokens. When BTC is deposited, a decentralized group of verifiers confirms the transaction and mints pBTC, a token fully backed 1:1 by Bitcoin.
pBTC can be used within smart contracts, as collateral, or transferred across chains using LayerZero’s Omnichain Fungible Token (OFT) standard. To withdraw, users burn their pBTC, after which verifiers collectively authorize the release of BTC back to the user’s address using threshold signature cryptography.

The XPL Token
XPL is the native token of the Plasma blockchain and serves several core functions within the ecosystem:
Gas fees: XPL is used to pay transaction fees on the network.
Network security: Validators stake XPL to participate in consensus and validate blocks.
Validator rewards: Validators earn XPL for supporting the network. Plasma applies reward slashing instead of stake slashing, meaning dishonest validators forfeit rewards rather than their staked tokens.
Delegation: XPL holders will be able to delegate tokens to validators, allowing participation in consensus and reward sharing without running validator infrastructure.
Plasma (XPL) on Binance HODLer Airdrops
On September 24, 2025, Binance announced XPL as the 44th project featured in its HODLer Airdrops program. Users who subscribed BNB to Simple Earn or On-Chain Yields products between September 10 and 13 were eligible to receive XPL rewards.
A total of 75 million XPL tokens were distributed through the airdrop, representing 0.75% of the total token supply at genesis. XPL was listed with the Seed Tag and made available for trading against USDT, USDC, BNB, FDUSD, and TRY.
