As blockchain usage grew, it became clear that single-chain processing could not scale indefinitely. Plasma was introduced as a framework to extend blockchain capacity by shifting most transaction activity to secondary chains, while keeping final settlement on the base layer.
This design reduces congestion and fees, enabling networks to handle higher transaction volumes. Plasma also introduced safety mechanisms that allow users to exit back to the main chain if a secondary chain fails, preserving trust and decentralization.
While newer Layer-2 solutions have refined these ideas, Plasma remains a significant milestone. It helped shape modern scalability approaches and demonstrated how layered architectures could support broader blockchain adoption.
