In traditional storage systems, the availability and trust is dependent on the honesty of the operators (or their reputation). Walrus storage systems break this model. It treats all nodes as unreliable. It assumes failures are a design reality— not tech edge cases. Using systems design, Walrus recovers data through erasure coding, with disappearing nodes, and colluding misbehaving nodes. No single operator (or small group of operators) can impair availability without being detected. Walrus places trust in the protocol and the math. It designed a system that can sustain availability during decaying operations, governance shifts, and changed incentives.
