Walrus: Challenge systems deter cheating, but raise operational complexity for users.

Walrus is interesting to me because decentralized storage usually fails in the boring ways: missing data, slow reads, and nobody clearly accountable. It’s like a warehouse with random spot-check inspections that keep workers honest.

The network stores files across multiple operators and relies on ongoing proofs and challenges to show the data is still there. If an operator can’t answer a challenge, it usually means they don’t have the data when they’re supposed to, so the network can hit them with penalties. That threat keeps people honest over time, but it isn’t “set and forget” for builders: you may still need basic monitoring, a retry plan for flaky reads, and some logic for when proofs show up late or a dispute slows things down. Token Role: WAL covers storage fees, supports staking for operator security, and is used in governance to tune the key parameters.Uncertainty: I’m not fully sure how well the challenge flow holds up under real congestion and adversarial coordination.
