New data from Chainalysis is shocking: 2025 has become the worst year in history for crypto fraud volume. Total losses have surpassed $17 billion, and this figure is expected to grow by about 24% as more schemes are uncovered.
But the numbers aren't the scariest part.
What's worse is the rise in personal tragedies. The average loss per victim has skyrocketed from $782 to $2,764. That's a 253% increase. Scammers have become not just more massive, but more targeted, extracting far more money per hit.
Why is this happening? The answer is one word: AI.
Research paints a clear picture:
Scammers using AI earn over $3.2 million per operation. Without AI, it's only about $719k.
Their average daily income is $4,838 compared to $518 for "traditional" scammers.
AI in Action: From Deepfakes to Insider Information
Deepfakes have become the norm. As JPMorgan noted back in July 2025, thieves are using realistic fake speech and video in "pig butchering" and romance scams. A victim sees an "investor" or "partner" on a video call and believes them unconditionally.
Automation and Personalization. AI allows for processing thousands of potential victims simultaneously, tailoring the approach to each. The speed and scale are unmatched compared to the past.
Hybrid Methods. A prime example is the Brooklyn case (December 2025), where 23-year-old Ronald Spector was charged with stealing $16 million from Coinbase users. The scammers bought insider information from a support employee ($250k for data on 70k customers) and then, posing as support agents, used polished scripts (potentially AI-powered) to convince people to transfer funds to "safe wallets" under their control.
What Are the Authorities Doing?
Law enforcement is fighting back. Will Lyne, head of the Metropolitan Police's cybercrime unit in London, acknowledges that organized crime is operating at an unprecedented "pace and scale." However, he notes that international cooperation and Digital Intelligence are starting to yield results: "We are in a much stronger position to identify criminal networks, seize illicit assets, and disrupt activity that harms our communities."
The Core Challenge for 2025 and Beyond: AI is blurring the line between legitimate service and sophisticated trap. Phishing sites, voice messages, video appeals – everything now looks flawless.
