At a point when ETH prices hit a nearly 9-month low, Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin published a lengthy article, providing a disruptive reflection on Ethereum's long-term Layer2-centric scaling strategy, explicitly stating an increase in investment in Layer1. This shift has caused a strong tremor in the crypto industry.
Vitalik stated in the text that the original roadmap centered around Rollup positioned Layer2 as Ethereum's 'branded shard', aiming to provide trustless block space, but this vision has become difficult to sustain. He pointed out that the decentralization process of Layer2 is 'far slower than expected', with most projects unable or unwilling to meet the trust guarantees required for true sharding. Coupled with corporate interests, technological bottlenecks, and regulatory concerns, the initial positioning of Layer2 has lost its meaning, and Ethereum must forge a new path.
