How Does the XRP Ledger Work?
In the previous episode, we explored what XRP is and why it was built for global payments. In this episode, we answer the real question: how does the XRP Ledger actually work, and why is it different from other blockchain systems?
The XRP Ledger does not rely on mining or a Proof-of-Work mechanism. There are no miners, no heavy machines, and no competition to create blocks. Instead, it uses a unique system known as a consensus protocol.
This means that a group of trusted validators on the network collectively agree on which transactions are valid. These validators do not compete — they cooperate.
The XRP Ledger is supported by dozens of independent validators distributed across the world. Every few seconds, they collect pending transactions and communicate with each other to decide which transactions should be included in the next ledger version. If at least 80% of validators agree, the transactions are confirmed and permanently recorded.
This entire process completes within 3–5 seconds. Once the ledger is updated, the transaction becomes final and irreversible — no rollbacks, no uncertainty. This is what gives the XRP Ledger its strong settlement finality.
Another major difference is that the XRP Ledger does not reward validators with newly created coins. Unlike Bitcoin or other mining-based systems, validators do not earn block rewards. This prevents power from gradually concentrating in the hands of a few large players. The goal here is network accuracy and stability, not profit-driven mining.
The XRP Ledger also gives users the freedom to choose which validators they trust. Every participant can create their own Unique Node List (UNL), meaning they decide whose validation opinions matter to them. If any organization or group attempts to abuse power, users can simply ignore those validators.
Because of this design, the XRP Ledger is considered fast, secure, and more decentralized in practice. It has been running reliably for years, successfully.
