China Declares a Full-Scale Crackdown on Cryptocurrencies.
The People’s Bank of China and seven agencies updated a joint notice reiterating that virtual currencies are not money in China and that most crypto business activity is illegal financial activity.
As of now, virtual currencies do not share the legal status of fiat currency in China.
The rules bar offshore entities from providing crypto-related services into the mainland and restrict issuance abroad, including RMB-pegged stablecoins without approval. The notice also expands compliance focus to real-world asset (RWA) tokenization and related intermediaries and technology providers.
Further, in the notice, all the dominant regulators wrote that bitcoin, ether, and tether do not have any legal tender status and should not and cannot be used as currency in market circulation, while outlining a long list of prohibited business activities tied to trading, issuance, and intermediation.
