The "Fat Finger" Incident (February 2026)$BTC
Bithumb, one of South Korea's largest crypto exchanges, made a massive technical blunder during a promotional event.
1. The Mistake: BTC instead of KRW
Bithumb was running a "Random Box" event where winners were supposed to receive 2,000 South Korean Won (KRW) (approx. $1.40). However, due to a system glitch, the system sent 2,000 Bitcoins (BTC) to each winner instead.
2. The Scale
Approximately 700 users received the windfall.
The total amount accidentally distributed was around 620,000 BTC.
At market prices, this was worth roughly $44 Billion, making it one of the largest financial errors in crypto history.
Bithumb's Response
Suspension: Bithumb halted all deposits and withdrawals within 35 minutes of the error.
Recovery: They have managed to recover about 99.7% of the funds by freezing accounts and reversing transactions.
Legal Warning: The company has warned that users who spent or withdrew the accidental funds could face legal action under South Korean law (Embezzlement of Lost Property).
Current Status: Most of the funds are back, but about 240 users managed to trade or move some portions before the lockdown. Bithumb is using its "User Protection Fund" to cover any remaining gaps and stabilize the platform.
