After being delayed earlier this month due to the U.S. government shutdown, September’s CPI data will finally be released tonight. With limited recent macro data, this report is expected to carry extra weight and could heavily influence the Fed’s upcoming policy outlook.
Economists project headline CPI to rise 0.39% MoM, while core CPI (excluding food and energy) is expected to increase 0.3%. That would put both measures at 3.1% YoY, roughly unchanged from last month, still far above the Fed’s 2% target.
Despite this, markets are pricing in two rate cuts, one next week and another in December, each expected to be 25bps.
