A $30,000 drop in less than ten days can shake market psychology like nothing else. Bitcoin ($BTC) plummeted from comfortably sitting above $90,000 on January 28th to hitting $60,000 by Friday morning. And the sentiment numbers make it clear just how badly that hurt.
The Fear and Greed Index plunged to 6. To put that in perspective, we haven’t seen numbers that low since August 2019. The index ranges from 0 (sheer panic) to 100 (peak euphoria), with market momentum and volatility accounting for roughly half the score. A reading of 6? The market is basically curled up in a fetal position.
Bitcoin has clawed back to around $69,000, but that rebound hasn’t done much to soothe nerves. Even as the price stabilized, the index kept sliding, highlighting just how shaken traders are. Back in mid-January, when Bitcoin flirted with $95,000, nobody expected this. The speed of the drop left almost no time to react—and that’s part of what makes it sting.
Now, here’s the interesting part. The Buffett mindset says extreme fear signals opportunity. “Buy when there’s blood in the streets,” they say. And historically, there’s some truth: sharp dives in this index have occasionally signaled turning points where sellers finally exhaust themselves and buyers step in.
But a word of caution. The last time the index hit these lows—in 2019—Bitcoin had already bounced significantly off the $3,500 bear market bottom and was trading two to three times higher. Sentiment was still grim, yet what followed wasn’t an instant surge. BTC spent months grinding sideways, repeatedly failing to break $10,000. The index was right that the worst was over—but it didn’t mean the good times started immediately.
That’s the uncomfortable reality today. Could $60,000 be the bottom? Absolutely possible. But a bottom doesn’t guarantee a V-shaped recovery. It could just as easily mean weeks or months of choppy, frustrating price action while the market rebuilds confidence.
