📉$BTC : Worst start to a year in history
50 days into 2026, and the numbers are mixed: Bitcoin is showing its biggest start to a financial year on record.
What is it?
• 23% drop: It has been steadily losing value since the beginning of January.
• Double whammy: January closed down -10%, $and February has already added another -15%.
• Record-breaking: According to Coinglass, Bitcoin has never closed both January and February in the red at the same time. Also, in the bears of 2015 or 2018, a fall in January was always followed by a green February.
Why is this important?
The overall Checkonchain index in bad years is at 0.84 50 days after launch. We are currently at 0.77, which indicates the abnormal depth of the current drawdown.
This trend looks especially strange against the backdrop of 2025 (which was also unprofitable, -17%). Historically, the years after the election should have shown growth, but 2026 is so far breaking all traditional patterns and cycles.
